PRACTICAL ENGLISH UPDATE
We are writing to update you on enhancements to Practical English 7.
As you'll know, Practical English 7 offers a highly personalised learning formula to identify weak areas and to provide study material that addresses individual needs as learners work through the course.
At Reallyenglish we regularly evaluate the effectiveness of our materials and delivery, and look at student feedback, user behaviour and learner data to inform developments. Our overarching aim is to always help students study the right thing, more often, with better results.
The next phase of development for Practical English is focused on level adjustment assessments which continuously measure the user's abilities.
This was deployed on 6 April 2021 – from this date any learners who are studying Practical English 7 in adaptive or learning path modes will see the following changes:
· Students begin with a diagnostic test in all skill areas as they would do currently.
· As the course progresses, the user may be prompted to take a computer adaptive test (CAT) in a skill area at different intervals which is dependent on their study performance. The CAT is dynamically generated based on both the student's starting level, and how well they answer items during the test.
· Based on the CAT performance in their level band, the system will suggest a level up, a level down or to continue at the current level.
· The user needs to confirm that they wish to move level putting them in control of opting in or opting out of easier or more difficult lessons.
· If the user opts in, a new learning path will be generated based on their results in the skill areas.
· The Adaptive and Learning Path modes will be unified into one mode: Learning Path, and the current Focus tab will become the Learning Path
This important development utilizes the latest technologies in formative computer adaptive testing to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) that detects when, and if, the learner would benefit from more or less challenging content.
We'll continue to update you on further enhancements to Practical English in the coming months. We hope that the addition of the level adjustment assessment is a welcome change. We're confident it will help your learners stay motivated and continue to maximise their learning progress.
As part of the enhancements above, students who are studying courses that do not use the adaptive or learning path mode will also see changes. The Learning Path tab will show one lesson at a time in the recommended order rather than three lessons at a time as it does currently. This builds the framework for future developments for courses that are structured but do not use the Learning Path.
On the admin side of the system, the Lesson Structure configuration for Adaptive Focus and Learning Path will also be unified and will show as Learning Path. All course templates and courses will be updated.
We are also sending as a separate attachment New Learning Path & Course Changes April 6 2021 which includes screenshots of the changes to help you visualise what you will see from this release.
Please pass on the relevant parts of this announcement to any other members of staff, clients, and students as you feel is appropriate or required.
